Privacy for the money guides

Independent, free guide. Not affiliated with BC Unclaimed or government.

We collect only your email, and only if you sign up. We never sell it, and we never ask for your SIN, bank details or payment.

1. Who we are

This policy covers the money guides at /money-owed/ and their related pages. It does not describe other GuidePointBC tools or services. Email signup is available only when the form confirms that your request was saved. You must also click the confirmation link in your email before you are subscribed.

GuidePointBC is operated by 1572035 B.C. LTD. It is a small, founder-run website based in British Columbia that publishes free guides to finding unclaimed money in Canada. Our privacy officer is John Tomchick. You can reach them at privacy@guidepointbc.ca or by mail at 1321 Blanshard St, Victoria.

2. Independence, and what we'll never ask for

We are independent. We're not a government program and aren't affiliated with any official source we link to. You always claim through the official site, never through us.

  • We will never ask for your Social Insurance Number (SIN).
  • We will never ask for bank details, ID or your date of birth.
  • We will never ask for any payment.
  • We will never contact you first about money owed to you.

If someone claiming to be GuidePointBC asks you for any of these, it isn't us.

3. What we collect

If you sign up for emails, we collect only your email address. With it we keep a small record of your consent: the consent wording and version, the page you signed up on, and signup, confirmation and unsubscribe times. We store hashed confirmation and unsubscribe tokens so that only the links in your email can change your subscription. We don't collect your name, address, SIN, bank details or anything about a claim.

4. Why we collect it

New unclaimed money gets added all the time. We'll email you when it's worth searching again. A few emails a year, never shared. Unsubscribe any time. We keep the consent record so we can show you agreed to receive our emails.

Separate optional follow-up

If you select the separate optional follow-up checkbox when signing up, you also agree to one short email about three weeks after confirmation asking whether you found money. It is not a drip sequence. Only new, separately consenting and confirmed subscribers are eligible; existing subscribers are not enrolled automatically. Unsubscribing stops this follow-up too.

Answering is optional. The answer choices are "Found it", "Still looking" and "Didn't search yet". We keep only the answer and calendar date in a separate answer table, without an email address or subscriber identifier. We may share aggregate counts with BC Unclaimed to describe visitor-reported outcomes. These answers do not prove an official claim or recovery, and do not establish that a visitor used BC Unclaimed.

Separate consent and delivery records let us enforce one follow-up and unsubscribe. Answer links use a random token, which is removed from the address bar before the answer is submitted. An answer link can be used once and expires after 90 days; the unsubscribe link does not expire with it. We exclude email-link pages from analytics and do not record answer text in PostHog.

Because answers are not kept with your email, we cannot look up an individual anonymous answer by email. We use only counts in reports; individual emails and consent records are not shared for the referral pitch.

5. Consent and how to withdraw it

We only email you if you tick an unchecked box and confirm by email. You can withdraw at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email, or by writing to privacy@guidepointbc.ca. The unsubscribe link stops further updates immediately when it succeeds. Confirmation links expire after 48 hours.

6. Sharing

We share your information only with the service providers who help us run the site (hosting, database, email delivery and analytics), and only so they can do that work. We never sell your information, and sponsors never get your email.

7. Storage outside Canada

Our service providers, including Supabase (database in Canada Central), Vercel (hosting), Resend (email delivery) and PostHog (anonymous analytics), may store or process data outside Canada, such as in the United States or the European Union. While it's there, it may be accessible to authorities in those countries under their laws.

8. How long we keep data

  • If you don't confirm your signup, we delete it after 30 days.
  • If you unsubscribe, we retain your address, consent record and unsubscribe time to prevent further updates. You may ask us to delete your record.

9. Security safeguards

We protect your information with encryption, access limited to those who need it, and contracts with our service providers. Because we collect so little, there's very little to expose.

10. Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you. Email privacy@guidepointbc.ca and we'll answer within 30 days.

11. How we handle breaches

If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we will report it to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and tell the people affected. We keep a record of every breach, whatever its size, for 24 months.

12. Cookies and analytics

We use PostHog in a separate GuidePointBC project to measure anonymous page visits, use of the official-search form, and clicks to official sources. Analytics uses page memory only, with no analytics cookies or local storage. We exclude form values, names, email addresses, search results, page text, and URL query strings from events. We do not record sessions or identify visitors by email. We respect your browser’s Do Not Track setting. Names typed into the on-page search stay in your browser; GuidePointBC only prepares links and does not receive results from official registries. If you choose to sign up for reminders, your email goes to our signup service, never to analytics. Official-link events record only the destination domain.

We don't store visitor IP addresses or location in our analytics.

13. Quebec residents

If you live in Quebec, Quebec's privacy law (Law 25) gives you rights over your information, including access and correction. Contact our privacy officer at privacy@guidepointbc.ca to use them.

14. Complaints

Please contact us first at privacy@guidepointbc.ca. If we don't resolve your concern, you can complain to:

15. Changes and effective date

If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the version number. If a change affects how we use your email, we'll ask for your consent again.

Effective date: October 17, 2026 · Version 6
