Settling an estate in BC? The person you're acting for may have unclaimed money. Start with their name on the official BC Unclaimed search, then check the estate-document requirements before making a claim.

I'm an executor, keep me posted

BC unclaimed property search for an estate

  1. Open the official search and enter the deceased person's name there. Try other names they used and different spellings.
  2. If you see a possible match, keep its reference details and ask BC Unclaimed for more information. A name match is not proof that the funds belong to the estate.
  3. Follow BC Unclaimed's instructions to create an account and start a claim on its own website. Submit documents only through the official service.

Checking is a useful step while organizing the estate's records. It does not replace checking banks, insurers and other official programs. See the inheritance guide for those other searches.

Who can claim for an estate?

BC Unclaimed's ordinary deceased-owner process works with the estate's executor or administrator. Being a relative does not by itself establish authority to claim for the estate. If someone else manages the estate, pass the possible match to them.

If BC Unclaimed says the money came from an intestate estate handled by the Public Guardian and Trustee of BC, ask for its specific instructions. Those cases follow a different process.

Executor document checklist

Confirm which list applies with BC Unclaimed. A will and a court grant are not interchangeable. This guide does not decide whether an estate needs probate.

If the estate was probated

  • A certified true copy of the death certificate.
  • A certified true copy of the Grant of Probate or Grant of Administration naming the estate representative.
  • Two pieces of the representative's government-issued ID.
  • Evidence connecting the deceased owner to the funds.

If the estate was not probated

  • A certified true copy of the death certificate.
  • A certified true copy of the will naming you as executor.
  • A document showing you acted as executor, plus a signed letter explaining why the estate was not probated.
  • Two pieces of your government-issued ID.
  • Evidence connecting the deceased owner to the funds.

Keep the possible match's reference details with your records. BC Unclaimed may ask for additional evidence or mailed certified copies. Follow its current instructions.

Nothing found?

Try name variations, then check the other official programs on the money-owed hub. No match in one search does not mean no money is owed.

Want a reminder when it's worth searching again? The hub has our optional email reminder signup. A few emails a year, no ads, never shared. We do not monitor a person's name or promise personal match alerts.

Questions before you continue

What if the name is different?

Try the names the person used, then ask BC Unclaimed what evidence it needs to connect a possible match. Do not assume a similar name proves ownership.

What if the funds came from a court?

BC Unclaimed's estate guidance says the executor must apply to the court for unclaimed court funds. Follow the official instructions for that record.

What if I received a suspicious message?

Open the official site yourself rather than following a message's link. Ask BC Unclaimed to verify the message and any possible match. A search result, or a lack of one, does not prove the message is genuine. See our scam guide.

What if my claim is refused?

Ask BC Unclaimed for the reason and its current review or dispute process. This guide does not decide entitlement or set out legal appeal steps.
